For my first Mother's Day, Candice and I went to my favorite makeup store, Sephora, for my first professional makeover. I walked up to this young woman, Joanna, and asked her if she was "up for a challenge?" which caused a brief quizzical look, followed by some recognition when I added "I'd like to have a makeover." She proceeded to ask me a few questions and we had a great time. Joanna has since proceeded to teach me nearly everything I know about makeup. I am eternally in her debt.
Perhaps my first public outing in a dress, something like my second or third visit to the LGBT Christian fellowship Bible study group that welcomed me warmly. At my first visit to this group (not photographed), going around the room introducing ourselves, Pat -- the leader that evening, said to me "Welcome Theresa, we've been wishing some women would join our group." That was the first time that anyone had ever referred to me as a woman, and it brought tears to my eyes, and still does every time I remember it.
